Voice seemed very thin and adolescent compared with Bryan Johnson, and not nearly as technically accomplished as Jacqueline Boyer. And I don't think it's a very original or catchy tune. Sounded to me like a computer -generated pastiche of a number from an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Music and singers are ever changing and new things develop with the times, obviously not always to everyones taste. All in the name of progression (and commercial interest) I suppose.
Vocal attributes and dynamics are judged very differently now but, I believe some good young singers are constantly emerging and music shouldn't stand entirely still!
Must admit I still listen to Jim Reeves amongst many other older singers as well as recent ones
too. I wonder how Bryan Johnson would have fared in 2014? I doubt he would have given Robbie Williams success story a run for it's money. He could have always gone for the beard and dress look though, it's funny just what will sell these days!

I heard a busker playing this recently in Green Park station - came third in the 1958 Eurovision

I think it's great song. Covered with English words by Dean Martin, but Gipsy Kings did, IMHO, and much better cover recently.

I remember it well - the year I took my 'O' levels. I hadn't realised it was a Eurovision entry - we weren't very conscious of TV in those days, as my father wouldn't allow us to have a set in the house in case it distracted my brother and me from our studies.

This Temperance Seven number is from 1961, the year I went to university.

(Sorry, youtube button doesn't seem to work for some reason.)

Better than their 'You're Driving Me Crazy' (number one in the 'hit parade'), I think.

It being the Feast Day of St James, I thought I'd post this

That wave
Pulled me into your eyes
Through the greeney grey pebbles
And countless cathedrals arriving
That wave
Lift me into your mouth
Turning spires and spittle of pearls
To perplex the young diver
I flew down to the bottom of the sea
Where I questioned the fishes all about it
I was in heaven
Address cloud eleven
They danced and laughed spelling all I fell into was love
That wave
Carried me through your hair
Up from suffocate seaweed
The perfumed cushions cascading
That wave
Pushed me into your skin
Where I bathed in the promises
Giddy with planets parading
I swam down to the bottom of the sky
Where I questioned the blue birds all about it
I was in heaven
Address cloud eleven
They danced and laughed spelling all I fell into was love
That wave!
That wave
Pulled me right overboard
Into permanent morgasm
Emotional action painting
I flew down to the bottom of the sea
Where I questioned the fishes all about it
I was in heaven
Address cloud eleven
They danced and laughed spelling all I fell into was love

Luckily I have most of XTC's output still on vinyl. Drums and Wires is a fantastic album as well as the following track shows

[youtubes]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0O4lkksFh8[/youtubes]

When you're near me I have difficulty respirating
When you're near me I have difficulty concentrating
When you're near me I have difficulty standing upright
When you're near me I have difficulty sleeping at night

I used to stand proud like a sphinx
In a noble immovable state
Then your heart nailed me under a jinx
Now I'm feeling like a jellyfish
Just a spineless wobbly jellyfish
And it's great, great, so great

I used to stand high like a pine
Just a piece of emotionless wood
When you put your body near mine
Now I'm feeling like a jellyfish
And it's good, good, so good
I used to be an iceman
Living in iceman town
So I'm warning all you cool cool icemen
You'd better be prepared to be melted right down
down
When you're near me I have difficulty

I'm still out there in Sydenham with my black XTC t shirt as you do.

The man who sailed around his soul
From East to West, from pole to pole
With ego as his drunken captain
Greed, the mutineer, had trapped all reason in the hold

The man who walked across his heart
Who took no compass, guide or chart
To rope and tar his blood congealed
When he found his self revealed ugly and cold

And the sirens that sing
By your nose with its ring
They'll drag you in
For your sins

Now he sits all alone
And it's no place like home
It's empty skin
A bag to keep life's souvenirs in
The man who sailed around his soul
The man who sailed around his soul

The man who sailed around his soul
Came back again to find a hole
Where once he thought compassion and the truth
Had laid to warm his freezing carcass on return

The man who walked across his heart
Was doomed to journey from the start
Of every love affair he'd broken
All the lies he'd ever spoken
Tattooed on his arm
And the jellyfish stings
Even angels with wings
Who look too deep
And dare to peep

Now he sits all alone
Knowing flesh blood and bone
Is everything
He found the treasure he'd been seeking
The man who sailed around his soul

Whilst the Scottish vote is being counted:

[youtubes]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o0NUmNNffM[/youtubes]

Will ye no come back again.

Bonniey Charlie's noo awa
Safely oer the friendly main;
Mony a heart will break in twa,
Should he no come back again.

Will ye no come back again?
Will ye no come back again?
Better loed ye canna be;
Will ye no come back again?

Ye trusted in your Hielan men,
They trusted you dear Charlie!
They kent your hiding in the glen,
Death and exile braving.

English bribes were a in vain
Tho puir and puirer we mun be;
Siller canna buy the heart
That aye beats warm for thine an thee.

We watched thee in the gloamin hour;
We watched thee in the mornin grey;
Though thirty thousand pounds they gie,
Oh, there is nane that would betray!

Sweet's the laverock's note an lang,
Liltin wildly up the glen;
But aye to me he sings a sang,
"Will ye no come back again?"

Thanks Tim. I always enjoy the amount of emotion that Nina put in to all of her recordings.
Here's one of my favourites by this soulfull lady:

[youtubes]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jgHOcXTr50[/youtubes]

Great song written by Barry and Robin Gibb. Michael Bolton (orig: Michael Bolotin) also did
a superb soulfull great cover too and probably heavily influenced by Nina.

Mommy had. A little baby.
There he is. Fast asleep.
He's just. A little plaything.
Why not. Wake him up?
Cute. Cute. Little baby.
Little pee pee. Little toes.
Now he's comin' to me.
Crawl across. The kitchen floor.

Baby, baby, please let me hold him
I wanna make him stay up all night
Sister, sister, he's just a plaything
We wanna make him stay up all night
Yeah we do

See him drink. From a bottle.
See him eat. From a plate.
Cute. Cute. As a button.
Don't you wanna make him. Stay up late.
And we're having fun. With no money.
Little smile. On his face.
Don't cha' love. The little baby.
Don't you want to make him. Stay up late.

[CHORUS]

Here we go (all night long)
Sister, sister (all night long)
In the playpen...woo...(all night long)
Little baby goes, ha! (all night long)
I know you want to leave me...

Why don't. We pretend.
There you go. Little man.
Cute. Cute. Why not?
Late at night. Wake him up.

[CHORUS]

Here we go (all night long)
Sister, sister...woo...
(with the television on)
Little baby goes...woo! (all night long)
Hey, hey, baby! (all night long)
And he looks so cute (all night long)
In his little red suit (all night long)

Awake, a dream
In the distance, a scream
Advanced
Entranced
Taking only a chance

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes
To show me it's cruel
My trust in you
Berlin is drowning me

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes
To show me it's cruel
My trust in you
Drowning in Berlin

Enraged
Incensed
There's no reason, no sense
Awake, a dream
In the distance, a scream

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes
To show me it's cruel
My trust in you
Berlin is drowning me

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes
To show me it's cruel
My trust in you
Drowning in Berlin

Sind sie allein in Berlin?
Sind sie allein in Berlin?

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes
To show me it's cruel
My trust in you
Berlin is drowning me

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes
To show me it's cruel
My trust in you
Drowning in Berlin

In and out, my mind goes
In and out, he goes

"Diamonds" being used on an advert, a gentler version than Rihanna's. Came across this version, by 11-yr-old Asanda Jezile on Britain's Got Talent. *Stands back in amazement*
