Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds over Sydenham?

Post by Tim Lund »

Spotted this afternoon

A Facebook friend suggests they may be remnants of Helmholtz clouds
An extremely rare phenomenon where a cloud produces a billowing wave pattern. The distinctive Kelvin-Helmholtz cloud occurs when there is a strong vertical shear between two air streams causing winds to blow faster at the upper level than at the lower levels.

They are named after Hermann von Helmholtz and William Thomson Kelvin who were meteorologists who studied turbulent air flow.

When did you take that photo?

At about 6:30pm I saw a different but unique phenomenon. An absolutely straight strip of blue sky between two banks of cumulus that went right across the sky. Never seen anything like it in my life.

Ok, seems that bbcode img tags don't like instagram, or vice versa.

Cool picture, all the same. I upload images to a WordPress site of mine.

There you go [put the jpg between the img tags]. The same as I saw except the blue strip was wider (about the width of the top of the nearest lamp) and a lt straighter. Even more dramatic.

OK - I found the JPG

by right clicking and inspecting the HTML. Is there an easier way to find it?

Could it be any easier for a fully qualified code inspector ?

I find all these odd meteorological phenomena very alarming. I fear they may presage the End Time. I suggest we all repent of our sins, without delay

In which case this was probably what was responsible for dumping a plague of "toxic caterpillars" on us.

But surely we're all beyond salvation on this forum?

Thanks to Stuart, I know have a slightly easier way to share photos on this Forum.

Don't fear the Pine Processionary Moth caterpillars!

Well as long as the larvae don't attack carpets. I'm still trying to get rid of last year's demonic carpet eaters.

On the news, it said that as long as you don't eat the caterpillars "that was half the problem solved". No mention of what the other half was, or the implications *scary music playing)

Back on clouds, I wish I'd seen the phenomenon but clouds don't hang around so a typical blink and miss it. Maybe that such phenomena don't remain static is a good sign since if they were to then scary music would have a field day.

PS to Maestro: If we're all beyond redemption and the proverbial lift goes down, is the devil responsible for the heating bill? If so where does he get his money if money laundering won't wash in a furnace? So many questions...

I'd defer to Robin on this - he's probably better informed. I think it's also necessary to be baptised first. Maybe he could arrange something in the Pool River, just behind the appropriately named SavaCentre

Tim Lund, I see what you did there - SavaCentre tee hee. How does one gain access to the rather goodly maintained streamside in your photo? I know it's there, but not really, only knowing that a rivulet is.

Never reject sound advice, I have taken a few minutes and done my list.

Where do we send it ?

All these questions. Why don't you just Google them, you lazy lot? I'm sure there's a website somewhere that will give you all the facts. And probably a 'how to do it' video on YouTube.

Re the oak processional caterpillar, don't be so sure they are safe, Tim. I had a bad allergic reaction while coming into contact at site they infested years beforehand. Just the dusty residue left in the nearby structure was all it took for my face and eyes to burn and swell...... No lasting damage, but scary indeed.
