Royal Mail to stop Saturday deliveries

Post by JGD »

The Royal Mail has made this announcement yesterday.

Industry insiders and unions believe the CEO of the company is using the crisis of the CV-19 pandemic to covertly implement his long term objective of permanently reducing the workforce by over 20,000 people.

It is evident that this same CEO will hold no meetings with trades unions as he sees no value in such meetings. Or maintaining good working relationships with his colleagues who are crucial to the success of the business, it might seem.

But then the CEO who was given a £6m "Golden Hello" to join the company, reportedly still lives in Switzerland, a goodly distance away from those his plans will damage most.

If this report is accurate the commentary contained in the public announcement made by an in-country subordinate that "We have also listened to our hard-working colleagues" will resonate particularly harshly with our hard-working posties.

We will always need the Royal Mail for the "last mile" delivery - not everything can be delivered by white-van people.

They are crucial to us now and will be in the future and deserve to be clapped as loudly as our NHS frontline carers.
In an article News Shopper wrote: Delivery giant Royal Mail has said it will “temporarily” stop the deliveries of letters on Saturdays.

It said it will continue to provide its letter delivery service from Monday to Friday as normal and said customers “should continue to post both letters and parcels as usual on Saturday”.

Royal Mail will continue to collect all mail from businesses, post offices and post boxes, it said.

When will Saturday deliveries 'temporarily' stop?

The will be halted from this weekend (Saturday, May 2).

What have Royal Mail said?

Shane O’Riordain, managing director of marketing, regulation and corporate affairs at Royal Mail, said: “Our postmen and postwomen are working very hard across the UK in challenging conditions.

“As we said at the start of the coronavirus crisis, there will be some disruption to services.

“We understand the importance of the postal service in keeping the UK connected at this time.

“We have also listened to our hard-working colleagues who have asked us to ease the additional burden on them if possible. As a result, we are making some temporary changes to postal services.”

BBC has just broken the news in the last two hours (Friday morning) that Royal Mail boss Rico Back is making a surprise exit from his Chief Executive role.

BBC makes no comment on whether he jumped or was pushed. It provides information on him having been put on gardening leave until 15 August, during which he will receive his pay and benefits totalling £480,000, plus up to £50,000 towards his legal fees and a maximum £25,000 towards outplacement support. No reference is made to whether the £6m "golden hello" paid by Royal Mail when he took on the role in 2018 is to be repaid.
The boss of Royal Mail is leaving after less than two years in the role amid reports he has been running the business from his home in Switzerland.

Rico Back will step down as chief executive with immediate effect and Keith Williams, the former boss of BA, will take over as executive chairman.

Mr Back has reportedly been at his Lake Zurich house since just after lockdown.

The Royal Mail said he was "following government advice to work from home unless you cannot".

Royal Mail has seen a sharp fall in letter volumes since the coronavirus lockdown was introduced in the UK on 23 March.

The company said that while there had been a "substantial switch from letters to parcels in the UK", revenues during April fell £22m compared to the same month last year.

It has also faced criticism from its own staff, who said last month that there was a shortage of gloves, masks and hand sanitiser to protect them from contracting coronavirus.

It has been announced that Royal Mail are to make 2,000 people redundant.

Despite actions earlier this month to dispense with the services of their oft-times absent CEO, the rationalisation plans proceed apace.

Regrettably it happens under the cover of the pandemic crisis.

Are these redundancies really necessary ? Is this announcement appropriate at this time ?

Our post men and women have been resilient in providing their crucial and invaluable services as key workers throughout the crisis.

They deserve better.

Indeed and you’d think anyone with a business brain would see this as an opportunity as home deliveries have skyrocketed. Even if they did postcode deliveries from local shops oor something. Post office is being run into the ground to make profit for somome
