24 hour working & deliveries for Trade City units, Bell Green

Post by JRW »

URGENT NEWS for anyone living on Moremead Road, Selworthy Road, Bell Green, and potentially affecting nighttime traffic more widely. There is an application for the Trade City units to have 24 hour working and deliveries. They are having trouble letting the empty units on the current hours.

I have no idea whether this might create a problem for anyone, but want to give you an opportunity to comment. The application reference is DC/21/124316, and you can see the details on the Lewisham planning portal. Then, if you wish to comment, email planning@lewisham.gov.uk, remembering to quote the reference number AND your full postal address. Without that, your comments won't be registered. The decision is imminent, and will probably be decided by an officer, so no time to lose.

De-facto there are several large scale units operating on the wider retail site with traffic to and from different traders being present overnight.

It is observable that a portion of the large size vehicles are EV-types with significant reduction in noise pollution being endured by residents.

The scale of overnight traffic is comparably not as polluting as the daytime tail-backs caused by the poorly designed and managed traffic systems in that area and the ever-present choke-point of the rail bridge on Southend Lane.

Good that an eye is kept on the issue but the Council and applicants may assert that precedent is set.

Real effort must remain focused on the improvements to the traffic management and roads design in the entire area and the widening of the rail bridge.

I absolutely agree, JGD. If we're talking about a few lorries unloading in the early hours, it probably helps ease traffic. However.

At the moment, dark kitchens are looking to expand, and ditto those 10 min grocery delivery apps. For many people, living a few streets away, that could be brilliant, allowing you to order from umpteen chain restaurants at any time, day or night. If you live in the Bell Green flats, however, the sound of constant delivery motorbikes and cars bombing down the spine road in the early hours may cause concern. It all depends where you live, and how well you sleep.

Anyway, it is down to the people who will be affected to decide for themselves. All I would say is that there is no try it and see option. If 24 hour permission is given, there is no controlling what happens there in the future.
