Why is this forum (and many like it) set at this width?

Is it some sort of good practice that web site should be only so wide?

The problem is that people view webpages on screens from around 320 to 1920 pixels wide. You can get screens to stretch but that makes reading difficult on very wide screens. So many of us choose to have fixed width. But what width? Historically the most common screen size was 800x640. So there was a sort of consensus to have pages around 760 pixels wide (to allow for scroller bar etc).

That is the current width of STF. The BBC decided a year ago to expand to fit 1024 screen and there is a general shift in that direction. We will be following soon. It gives more room for pix etc and the mobile version will fill in for smaller screen sizes.

Sometimes you have just got to let go...before they let you down.

But I like orange y fronts with purple piping! ;0))
