Spot the location

Post by Juwlz »

Hi everyone,

Wonder if you could help me out (if you guys can't then no-one can!)
This is a picture which was painted by Pissarro in 1871 called 'Near Sydenham Hill' apparently its a view 'looking towards Lower Norwood'.

Unfortunately it currently belongs to the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas so not very handy to go and look at!

Any ideas of the exact location this might have been painted from?

Good question, Julia! I never even noticed this painting when flicking through my mini Pissarro book. Let's see...

According to the paragraph in the book, Pissarro was standing in the same spot along College Road where he painted St. Stephen's Church, but is now looking west towards Alleyn Park (the red house in the middle is 35 Alleyn Park; other white houses were later replaced). Technically, he was still on Sydenham Heights, but to us he was in foreign territory! :)
