The Great War Classroom (3 July)

Post by SydArts »

Part of the 2016 Sydenham Arts Summer Festival 1-10 July 2016

Experience what it would have been like to be a member of a school class during a typical lesson in 1916. Presented by Sydenham Arts. Visit the sub-site now!

As the UK commemorates the centenary of the First World War, thanks to support by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sydenham Arts have been researching one aspect of WW1 heritage which has received relatively little attention: its effect on the education experiences of teachers and school children of the time.

Pulling together our research into the factual histories of real teachers and school children in SouthEast London, we invite you to an immersive classroom experience with Dr. Charles Maddock Stuart, a former headmaster of local school St. Dunstan’s College.

As a “pupil” your formal lesson will be approximately half an hour, followed by thirty minutes of facilitated discussion in which attendees may ask questions or offer their thoughts on the classroom experience itself and reflections on the Great War in general, particularly how it impacted on children of school age and their families.

Date: 3 July 2016
Time: 2pm & 4pm
Venue: Sydenham Hub, 44a Sydenham Road, SE26 5QX

Suitable for ages 8+
