Interesting that there is nothing substantially new since you wrote that 15 years ago.

He certainly sounds like he was a frightful bounder ;-)

Wonder where those jewels could be - maybe buried in Trewsbury Road allotments ......

Francis Shackleton

Anything new in this? Or just confirmation of what was believed?

Yeah either that or a head shop.

There is a huge gap in the market ever since The Hempire closed down.

OK back on topic, here goes then :-) I think its 'OK' to have a Town Pub, and The Greyhound seems to be as good a name as any, although it may be dogged with terrible puns ;-) However, given that this is a Sydenham forum - could I make an appeal please that the posts in the Pub section don't get fla...

I suspect that it was not your grammar that was being castigated.

Dammit, now I feel compelled to watch my grammar and use big words.

Bit harsh there KennyB2 - hope we don't have to spell check and grammar check every time we post now ;-) One thing I've learnt (or is that learned, oops .....) is that good grammar, punctuation and spelling don't mean that someone is intelligent or even decent. So lets live and let live, in perfect ...

Beware of recommendations on internet forums

(Hmmm, probably a bit of a contradiction there but anyway.......) Just noticed some recommendations for everything from plasterers to car leasing on here lately. While they may be genuine enough, they can just as easly be posted by the person who is being recommended which is a bit naughty. I would ...

Didn't you read - they have a witness who was drinking in the Railway Tavern.

Can't ask for finer testimony than that.

If you want to have flexibility regarding which station to use, then consider living somewhere within say 10 mins of Sydenham Station and also Penge East Station. That really opens up your options as you can go directly (and quickly) into Victoria or Blackfriars directly or obviously to London Bridg...

Congratulations Admin and thanks for providing us with this forum - it's a great resource for the community.

And I think you are being too modest when you say that it doesn't take that much effort - so thanks again for keeping it all going and making sure we all play nicely together :-)

Not that I doubt you for one second - but I must have a look for those arches next time I am in the station!

Steve, can you confirm that this view was taken from the Up platform i.e. we are looking north?

I have a notion that it was taken from the other side and that the buiding we can see is the Railway Tavern?

Or am I going mad? and if so, then what is that building to the South-east of the bridge?

On that basis I think we can claim him :-)

Thanks for the interesting details in your response Steve, I really enjoy reading your posts and other articles about Sydenham history, as I am sure do many others.

And now, back to pedants corner for me :-)

Now Steve you know very well he did not 'come from Sydenham' but rather that he 'moved to Sydenham' having come from Co Kildare, Ireland.

Otherwise we should describe Rolf Harris as the well known painter and performer from Sydenham ;-)

Or am I being a bit TOO pedantic?

You could probably put Timbuktu in those fields, as long as you have the first line of the adress and the postcode correct, and UK in the country field. Royal Mail and courier companies use these fields pimarily, so whether you put Kent or London or Sydenham in the County field doesn't matter too mu...

Ok, got to come clean, I made that bit up.

Probably is owned by someone called Nicola who can't punctuate.

I really doubt (based on gut feel as opposed to hard evidence) that the price of property has dipped in Sydenham. Are you really saying that properties are selling for less than they were previously? If so, is that based on gut-feel or .....? Or do you mean that the rate of increase of property pric...
